Throw Back Series 5 – Isaiah 9

This is the 5th installment of the Throw Back Series. I am reviewing posts I wrote a while ago and catching up with where God was taking me back then. This post is from December of 2008. I hope you enjoy and are encouraged.

The Advent season is coming to a close.  I get to laughing at all of the lines that cross pointing at Isaiah 9.  I wonder if because we are in the season of Advent, am I just super-sensitive to that passage…You tell me.

It began the first weekend of December.  My U17 girls soccer team had a Sunday morning Bible study.  We studied Isaiah 9:3.  It talks about a season of harvest and there is joy in the harvest.

We don’t really understand this today in 2008/2009.

We are in a season of Microwaves.  What?!  Yes, microwaves.  You know.  We like to put stuff in a black box, turn a dial or push a button, and 1 or 2 or 3 minutes later…’bing’…microwaved Ramen Noodles, microwaved, soup, microwaved coffee, microwaved…fill in the blank.

What is a harvest?

Why is there joy in a harvest?

Why do people celebrate a harvest?

I celebrate when I hear the ‘bing’ on the microwave because that means the pizza from last night is…

A harvest is a communal experience.  It is a family event.  It is a larger-than-me-and-the-little-black-box circumstance that calls on all who are able, to participate.

Joy in the harvest.

When I hear the ‘bing’ three minutes later, I have not participated with anyone; I have not spent the time with family; I have not spent time with community.  When I put something in the little black box, it is usually because I am speeding off to some other event, or I’m late, or I’m lazy.

Joy in the harvest

The Bible says in Luke 10 that “The harvest is large, but the workers are few.  So ask the Lord who gives this harvest to send workers to harvest His crops. Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.

Joy in the harvest

There is a large harvest to be reaped.  Are you working on the harvest?  Am I working on the harvest?  Are we helping each other with the harvest?

No microwaves and no ‘bing’s.

Joy in the harvest.

Because of the cultivating of a relationship, of a career path, of a spiritual calling, etc., and seeing the harvest come from our cultivation, we will be joyful in anticipation, in reaping our harvest and in enjoying our harvest.

We will reap what we sow.  May our harvest be joyful.

Isaiah 9

The Harvest has come.  Let us be joyful!
