This is the 6th installment of the Throw Back Series. This post was written as a reply to a call for a New Year’s Resolution for 2009. As I look back, a shift in my spirit began. I began to not just look for more, but I knew there was more. Perhaps you can see that too. I hope you enjoy and are encouraged!
Blessed is the person who does not follow the advice of wicked people, take the path of sinners, or join the company of mocker. Rather, he delights in the teachings of the Lord and reflects on his teachings day and night.
He is like a tree planted beside streams – a tree that produces fruit in season and whose leaves do not wither. He succeeds in everything he does.
Wicked people are not like that. Instead, they are like husks that the wind blows away. That is why wicked people will not be able to stand in the judgement and sinners will not be able to stand where righteous people gather.
The Lord knows the way of righteous people, but the way of wicked people will end.
Psalm 1, God’s Word Translation.
I have been struggling with what Righteous means. How can I be “righteous?” There are a lot of verses that speak of righteousness. I don’t know if I know how to explain this to someone.
Having read Psalm 1, I pondered the thought of being planted beside streams, producing fruit in season, not withering, succeeding, delighting in the teaching of the Lord day and night.
Today in my church Bible study we talked about a new year’s resolution being that some of us might want to read the Bible every day. Why just every day? Why not day and night? Why not when you have a minute to rest? Why not at a break at work? Why not while you’re walking to your next event? Why not with your friends?
Why freakin not?!?!
Why are we just concerned about checking it off my list for today? Why can’t we want to be in the Word? Day and Night?
I came to that frustration today. I am sick and tired of getting upset that I didn’t read the Word today. What if I heard from the Lord at a movie theater…did I listen then? If I read His Word, do I listen then? If I hear Him say, “Talk to this person.” and I don’t, why should I even be trying to call myself a Christian? Jesus Christ would talk with someone that God moved Him to. That is what I should be pursuing. So, to be in His Word once per day…
Is it that big of a deal? Why do I watch tv? Turn the tv off.
Listen to God speak to you through His Word. Then DO SOMETHING! Don’t be a consumer!!!! Be a follower of Christ. Listen then DO. That is what I must be for Jesus. That is plain and simple. I must listen to Him and then DO. Like 1 John 5 says in verses 1-4a:
“Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Messiah has been born from God. Everyone who loves the Father also loves his children. We know that we love God’s children when we love God by obeying his commandments. To love God means that we obey his commandments. Obeying his commandments isn’t difficult because everyone who has been born from God has won the victory over the world.”
It is your action from your faith. Do it!!
One of my pursuits of 2009 is to understand a few concepts:
I hope God continues to Stretch me, Heal me and Ruin me for His Kingdom!
