At A Pay Phone

I got this one song stuck in my head for days. First of all, I am enthralled with Adam Levine’s voice. I appreciate the talent he has. His voice really shines in this specific song called “Payphone.”

As I listened to this song on repeat, I began to really dive into the lyrics he is presenting. And that’s when it hit me. He is looking for Home!

Pursuits

In the song, there is an issue where the singer has been distanced from the one he has pursued for so long. The bridges that brought the two together have been burned down by an empty pursuit. The pursued did not reciprocate love. Just took all of the love given.

This is an amazing picture of the pursuits of man. We go after the lusts of this world: sex, money, power… yet, these pursuits do not respond. Sure, they tease us here and there to help us to continue to go after them, but there is no fairy tale ending with these pursuits.

Paradise

The singer is frozen in the moment of pursuing. His response is inside his moment. He can only see from where he is. He croons that even the sun sets on paradise.

When we stay in the environments that provide similar results, we see the sun setting. We can only see what is in the realm we have allowed ourselves to be in. When the sun sets it is cooler. It is darker. It is disorienting. We stay in this realm when we look for it.

Pay Phone

However, there is hope in this song. The hope is in the very first lyric, “I’m at a pay phone, trying to call home…” He has found there is no life in the pursuit of sex, money, and power. There is a place that he wants to connect with after all of the stray pursuits.

Home.

May we see the vain and empty pursuits of this world. May we realize, all we have to do is communicate with Home. God’s Family is a place of welcome, of love, of mutuality, of Happy Ever After.

He is Happy. He is Ever. He is After.

Here’s a video of the song covered by Satellites and Sirens. Enjoy!

“Payphone”
Maroon 5 minus Wiz Kalifa

I’m at a payphone trying to call home
All of my change I spent on you
Where have the times gone, baby it’s all wrong
Where are the plans we made for two?

Yeah, I, I know it’s hard to remember,
The people we used to be…
It’s even harder to picture,
That you’re not here next to me.

You say it’s too late to make it,
But is it too late to try?
And in our time that you wasted
All of our bridges burned down

I’ve wasted my nights,
You turned out the lights
Now I’m paralyzed,
Still stuck in that time,
When we called it love,
But even the sun sets in paradise

I’m at a payphone trying to call home
All of my change I spent on you
Where have the times gone, baby it’s all wrong
Where are the plans we made for two?

If “Happy Ever Afters” did exist,
I would still be holding you like this
All those fairy tales are full of it.
One more stupid love song, I’ll be sick

Oh, you turned your back on tomorrow
‘Cause you forgot yesterday.
I gave you my love to borrow,
But you just gave it away.

You can’t expect me to be fine,
I don’t expect you to care
I know I’ve said it before,
But all of our bridges burned down

I’ve wasted my nights,
You turned out the lights
Now I’m paralyzed,
Still stuck in that time,
When we called it love,
But even the sun sets in paradise

I’m at a payphone trying to call home
All of my change I spent on you
Where have the times gone, baby it’s all wrong
Where are the plans we made for two?

If “Happy Ever Afters” did exist,
I would still be holding you like this
All those fairy tales are full of it.
One more stupid love song, I’ll be sick
Now I’m at a payphone

  1. Mark,

Thanks for sharing this song brother. Thank God that He allows us to waste our resources on those who cannot satisfy. He allows us to go broke, so that even the call home has to be ‘collect’:) Just when we’re in need of making that collect call home however, He calls us!

Thanks for reading Jamal. It is a huge blessing to be able to go broke. What a cool picture of walking to a phone to make a ‘collect’ call and the phone ringing as you go to pick up the receiver.

I also think we are talking about something that is from the 90’s and before! But praise the Lord for His willingness to stretch us to see Him!

“Even the sun sets in paradise…” Nah bruh! So often we think we’ve found paradise in the world, only to be disappointed. I used to brush off the disappointment and run to the next false paradise only to be disappointed again. What a sick cycle. I’m so grateful to Christ for showing me Home, which is a true paradise where the sun never sets. Thanks Mark. I never would have taken the time to listen to this song in this way.

Amen RC! Home is a wonderful place of rest from doing and running and chasing after a setting sun. Home is the place of the eternal sun! And happy ever afters do exist! Love you bro. Thanks for reading and chiming in.

Home is where we all long to be, and as you well understand bro we are home in Christ. The payphone portion of this song reminds me of back in the day there was a person to person option for a call. The call went like this, I would call the operator and ask to make a person to person call to Mark Champion, at your home phone. The operator would then call your house, and state she had a person to person call for Mark Champion. This call was for only you. These were very rare, and most often signified a call of importance.

This is how we are desperately wanting to connect, to find rest, a home, a true meaning to life, and just as Jamal states ” Just when we’re in need of making that collect call home however, He calls us!”

I love how Christ shows up in what may seem like an ordinary event, and we then see Him communicating with us, truly a blessing.

Amen Jim! Home in Christ! No better place to be.

Thanks for sharing about person-to-person calls…gotta say I have not heard of that. Sorry! 🙂

The true blessing is seeing Christ as Home, as Rest, as the true meaning to Life. Thanks for sharing your words and your heart. Welcome Home!
